KABUL (Pajhwok): Provincial council (PC) members on Monday said the government should seek their consent in appointing governors so that more cooperative environment could be created in provinces.
Speaking at a three-day conference on good governance that began here, the public representatives demanded more cooperation from government departments in provinces.
They asked the president to give them back their legal powers of evaluation and observation of the governance on local level. They also demanded the president appoint new governors to provinces in consultation with them.
The conference is organised by the Meshrano Jirga for provincial council members. Various issues pertaining to the provincial council’s role in ensuring good governance is being discussed at the event after which the participants would draw up a draft suggesting powers and responsibilities of provincial council members.
Huma Ahmadi, a provincial council member from Logar, the government should not deprive provincial councils from their powers as their strong presence in provinces was vital for good governance and elimination of corruption.
She cited a resolution that had unanimously approved by provincial councisl. “Provincial council members are committed to their role in establishment of peace, elimination of corruption and creation of positive and more cooperative environment between the government and the people,” the resolution said.
The members also demanded an increase in their salaries.
