JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Residents and civil society activists in eastern Laghman province say women’s participation in the October parliamentary elections was weak in the province due to insecurity.

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Laghman province on Sunday pledged that promotion of education was his top priority that teachers would be given residential plots to promote the vital sector.
Laghman Governor Abdul Jabbar told Pajhwok Afghan News that every challenge in the education department would be resolved for a developed Afghanistan.
“It is my top priority to give residential plots to teachers since they have legal right to be given residential land to focus on more on educating our next generation,” he added.

MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Provincial council members in eastern Laghman province on Sunday complained local departments did not have coordination with the council but they still managed to evaluate performance of some departments.
Mohammad Zahir Hussainkhel, provincial council secretary, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had many achievements in the last few months thanks to their closer cooperation with local populace.
But he said it was the local officials who did not cooperate with them and yet they visited some of the local departments to look closely their activities.

KABUL (Pajhwok): Several development projects have been completed and work on others is in progress in eastern Laghman, northern Balkh and central Kabul provinces, officials said on Wednesday.
Two projects costing 24 million afghanis were inaugurated in Laghman. Laghman acting governor Dr. Fazlullah Mujeddedi on Wednesday inaugurated construction work on a retaining wall measuring 230 metres in the Alishang district.
The 11 million afghanis project would protect nearby homes and agricultural land of residents from being flooded by the Aishang River, the governor said.

MEHTERLAM (Pajhwok): Three persons were killed and five others wounded on Tuesday in a gun battle between two groups of Laghman lawmakers in Mehtarlam City, the provincial capital, witnesses said.
Wahidullah, an eye witness, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Eng. Ajmal Wafa and Yousaf Malangzai, both the lawmakers from Laghman, exchanged harsh words which developed into an armed clash. The bodyguards and supporters of the lawmakers opened fire on each other which caused several casualties.

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The presence of a large number of irresponsible gunmen poses a serious threat to security in eastern Laghman province, a public representative said on Sunday.

In an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, the Laghman provincial council secretary blamed the security forces for failing to rein in gun-toting individuals.

Mohammad Zahir Hassankhel said he had shared the issue with the governor’s house, but remedial measures had not been taken so far.

PUL-I-ALAM/ LASHKARGAH, QALAT, MEHTARLAM (Pajhwok): Three militants were killed and five others, including two policemen wounded in bomb blasts and clashes in southern Zabul, Helmand, central Logar and eastern Laghman provinces on Saturday, officials said.
Three civilians were injured in a mine blast at a station in Mughal Khel High School in Mohammad Agha district, said Abdul Halim, the district administrative chief.
Soon after the blast, he said security forces cordoned off the area and voters had returned to cast their vote.

JALALABAD (PAN): Heavy rainfall that lasted two hours led to devastating floods in the capital and other parts of eastern Laghman province, an official said on Wednesday.
The floods destroyed dozens of homes, swept away several household animals and inundated hundreds of acres of agriculture land, the governor’s spokesman said.
