PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Failed provincial council candidates and their supporters on Sunday rallied in northern Baghlan province, blocking the Kabul-North highway.

About 200 people carrying photos of election officials with cross marks on their faces assembled in front of the provincial Independent Election Commission (IEC) office here.

A failed PC candidate Noorullah Riazat said they had been expecting the IEC and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC) would separate valid and invalid votes, but they did not.

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The newly-elected provincial council (PC) members of northern Baghlan province on Saturday took oath, vowing to fight corruption and ethnic discrimination.

As many as 155 individuals contested the April elections in Baghlan, with 15 of them, including three women, winning seats on the body. Of the elected members, 11 are new faces and educated individuals.

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Most of the winning provincial council candidates in northern Baghlan province are new faces and highly educated.

The previous provincial council had only three members holding BA degrees, but the council-elect has 7 members having the same qualification.

In the field of 155 contenders, 15 runners, including three women, have found their way to the body. A majority, 11 members elect, are new faces.

PUL-I-KHUMRI/FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A public representative from northern Baghlan province escaped unhurt but one of his guards was wounded in an armed attack, an official said on Wednesday.

Wolesi Jirga member Ashiqullah Wafa came under attack from suspected militants on the Baghlan-Kabul highway while returning home, police spokesman Javed Basharat told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The attackers fled the scene before the arrival of police in the area, Basharat said, adding that the parliamentarian had not informed them about his travel.
